The First Years
CC Computers storefront first opened officially in Pankeyville in 1995, just south of Harrisburg. The building was on the highway in front of Rister Brothers Equipment at the time. That location was easily accessible and close to where we lived at the time. During part of those 10 years at that location, we shared office space with Roberts Contracting. There was way more space than both of could use and the arrangement worked out well for both of us. Thank you to Rister Brothers and Roberts Contracting for your part in the early years of CC Computers.
During those early years in Pankeyville, Mac Haenel came to work for CC Computers and has been with us ever since. He has been a great asset as well as friend down through the years. We have seen each other through some difficult times over those years. We had gotten acquainted earlier in the BBS era, prior to internet technology development. We built many custom computers in those early days, as pre-built units were not as common at the time. We even set up a computer lab in one room, and taught classes for a few years.
The old building has since been torn down, but memories of those early days remain.
Time to Move
It was early 2005 and a good friend of mine, Doug Cottom, had recently purchased the old skating rink building in Muddy next door to his business Ross Cottom Lanes. I work in the pro shop there and being next door would be handy for me to run over to the bowl as well as be a better location for CC Computers. Doug agreed to let me rent the front part of that building for the business, so I started some remodel work in preparation for the move.
Before we got moved to our new location, I lost my wife Tammie in a car accident in July 2005. While working on the remodel one day, she brought me a big glass of iced tea by before she started to our home in Eddyville. That was the last time I would ever see her alive. Needless to say, life would never be the same, but I eventually finished the remodel and moved to the new location on the highway in Muddy next to Ross Cottom Lanes. That location served us well, and I thank Doug and Stacy Cottom for their part in CC Computers history.
Moving on Up
In Late 2007, Doug had listed the property for sale so I started looking for options to relocate the business. As it worked out, there was an opportunity that became available just up the road at the north end of Muddy. The location was great, so I purchased that building and started getting it ready to move CC Computers to the third and hopefully final location.
We initially moved into the rear of the building, as the layout was perfectly arranged for our business. Although I preferred to be in the front of the building, the plan was to remodel the front while doing business in the rear location. Instead, the front ended up renting out for a time until about 6 years later. It was at that time that CC Computers finally came to occupy the front of the building as you see today.
Muddy, IL, has been a great location for the computer business. We have easy access off the highway and great visual exposure. I have several business friends and family in the area, and it is a great place to live and work.
